About This Calculator

The Packer Test Stage Gauge Pressure Calculator is designed to help geotechnical engineers plan in-situ permeability tests by calculating the required gauge pressures for each test stage. This tool simplifies the planning process and helps ensure tests are conducted at appropriate pressures.

How It Works

This calculator uses the following formula to determine the required gauge pressure for each test stage:

Pmax = Poverburden - Phydrostatic

Poverburden = Z * γrock

Phydrostatic = (Z - Hw) * γw

Pg = (Percentage/100 * Pmax) - [(Hw + Hg) * γw)]

Pmax = Maximum test pressure (kPa)

γrock = Unit weight of rock overburden (kN/m³)

γw = Unit weight of water (kN/m³)

Z = Depth to mid-point of test section (m)

Hw = Depth to initial groundwater level (m)

Hg = Pressure gauge height above ground level (m)

Percentage = Percentage of Pmax for the stage (%)

When to Use

Use this calculator during the planning phase of geohydraulic assessments to determine appropriate gauge pressures for each water pressure test stage. This helps ensure that tests are conducted at suitable pressures to characterise the hydraulic properties of rock masses without causing hydraulic jacking (hydrojacking) or hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracturing).

Key Benefits:

  • Accurately plan test stages based on site-specific conditions.
  • Prevent hydrojacking and hydrofracturing by maintaining appropriate effective test pressures.
  • Optimise field testing procedures and improve data quality.
  • Save time by quickly calculating multiple test stage pressures.
